We’re back this month at Krzyz Photo with a group show entitled: Homeworld Secured.  Homeworld Secured is a one-night only interactive art performance that will engage the public with imagery insightful of the current national impression.  This exhibition features new work by Kansas City based artists Tarin Von Eicher, James Jukes, Scott Foulk and Alexander Hamil. “They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither safety nor liberty.” – Benjamin Franklin. We could tell you more but let’s just say you might want to loosen your shoelaces, not carry any liquids larger than three ounces and keep you fingernail clippers at home.

The Hilliard Gallery presents Missiles & Mugs the work of Guinotte Wise. “If you want an explanation for what I do,” says Wise, “go watch Caine’s Arcade. It’s a ten minute video about a nine-year-old kid in East Los Angeles, and the reason it captivated me so much is it reminded me of me at that age.” The video Guinotte Wise refers to is available at CainesArcade.com and Wise guarantees you’ll like it. “Cheerful refund if not,” he says. Wise taps into his kidhood for much of his sculpture, in this case (Missiles & Mugs) fanciful rocketlike things that look primed to go off. And some faces inspired by shapes looking at him from his junkyard. About the missiles, he says,”I just love things that look like you flip a switch and it’ll fly off to another continent, another mindscape.”  The other must-see component to the May 5th First Friday opening at the Hilliard Gallery, 1820 McGee, is a room of love letters. Diana Marye Huff, an artist friend of the Wises, and a longtime fan of Henri Toulouse-Lautrec, has put together a compelling display of belles-lettres between the painter and May Belfort in 1895. They are painted in Huff’s inimitable style and cannot be readily explained. She has also printed a book of the letters, which will be for sale at the gallery, as will the separate paintings. The Slap -n- Tickle Gallery will present: Naked Nana – New Work by Carolyn Shepardson. This first solo show by artist Carolyn Shepardson is body of work relentless in its exploration of the human figure. Through a two-fold path of discovery, the nude and self-portraiture, the artist’s recent compositions blend both sources of inspiration. Her use of humor is evident in the juxtaposition of the internal conflicts of such intimate subject matter with her determined efforts to thoroughly understand the figure in front of her. The strength of her unflinching look at the artist as subject is enhanced by her mastery of a variety of media. The Hilliard Gallery has The Art of The Drawing, a group show. Drawing is a form of visual expression and is one of the major forms within the visual arts. The Hilliard Gallery will feature this form of artwork during the Month of March.
